News from the Nest

Dear Parents/Guardians,

I hope you enjoy these wonderful pictures from our Stuartholme Boarding Facebook Page! The lead photo of the girls at Big Night Out is testament to the way our boarders give back to the community. Big Night Out is a socially inclusive Dance Party organised by and for young adults. Thanks to Miss Claire for making our Recreation Program so innovative and generous! I was interviewed by the Australian newspaper this week about the range of volunteering opportunities Stuartholme boarders have and it was great to be able to discuss Big Night Out, Orange Sky Laundry and Yeronga Homework Club – to name a few!

This week, we had a very productive meeting with the Boarding Leadership Team from Nudgee College who visited us to share practice and ideas about boarding. It was great connecting with our colleagues and finding out how they promote their boys’ wellbeing and happiness. We are going to share some Professional Development opportunities next year. Stuartholme boarding positives that we shared with Nudgee included our Boarding Wellbeing Program and its strengths focus for each year level, our innovative and increasingly social justice oriented Recreation Program and our Boarding Leadership Program.

Our Year 11s visited Marist this week for a wonderful Dinner and Etiquette night. These relationships with our brother schools are ones that we greatly value! The Duchesne visit last week was also incredibly worthwhile and the girls loved the opportunity to see our ‘sister’ University College in action!

Next week, many Year 11s will have the opportunity to speak to the entire House about why they would like to be a Boarding Captain or Mentor for Years 7-10 in 2018.  It is wonderful that so many girls are putting themselves forward in nominating. Courage is shown even in the act of having a go!  Our current Year 12s have been outstanding service-based leaders and they have led through collaboration and encouragement. I look forward to hearing the speeches!

This Saturday, we host our first Boarder Family Get Together and around 50 people are coming as well as all the girls. You can still register to come through the online payment on the Portal. Choose Boarding Miscellaneous and the cost is $30 for any number of family members (Beer and wine are included). It will be fantastic catching up with you at this event from 5-7.30 pm at the Café Area!

Lots of colds are sweeping around but these are affecting staff more than girls at this point. We are reminding the girls about hygiene and staying warm. Spirits are high at present even though this is a very intensive work period especially for the 11s and 12s. Tutors are available in House from Monday to Thursday nights. If you would like your daughter to use this opportunity, please let Claire Lawler ( know. All year levels are welcome although we will prioritise Senior students if we need to. Click here for the list of tutors and times.

As you know, we are blessed with an amazing catering crew. On Monday night, we are farewelling Mr Shane Hall from the Kitchen. Shane has been instrumental in getting the Breakfast Club up and going, as well as our fabulous theme nights. He is leaving to manage a Gelati Company in NZ so the girls are excited about this although we are very sad to be losing him. We also congratulate Mr Kester Biggs, our Catering Manager who has just welcomed a little boy Edward into the world!

My big news is that I am taking Long Service Leave from next Friday 18 August until the first day back next term so in my absence Ms Sarah Daff, Leader of Mission will be acting in my boarding role. Sarah is known and loved by the boarders and the staff and I know she will do a wonderful job in my absence. Like me, Sarah is very open to feedback and communication with you. Her email is and her mobile is 0423 182 693 (emergencies only please).

Until then, take care and I am looking forward to seeing lots of you on Saturday. I will be thinking of you from Paris very soon!!

Warm regards,
Andree Rice – Deputy Principal, Boarding
