Message from the Principal

Dear Parents, Caregivers and Friends,

As you are aware, I have written to every parent in every year level, with the exception of parents of Year 12 students (email dated Monday 10 October) to inform you of the new three-year program to roll-out student IT Devices. In this Newsletter you will find information on the BYOD Program, including the link to our website with the selected devices.

This Stuartholme BYOD Program requires parents of students in Year 7 and 10 2017 to purchase a device for their daughter. Years 8, 9, 11 and 12 students (2017) will receive a school provided device. This ‘cascading’ roll-out over the next three-years will ensure a sustainable program moving into the future.

Since 2008, Stuartholme has recognised that having the skills to learn in a digital environment is a key part of 21st century learning. Over this time, the use of technologies has become embedded in our teaching and learning where they are used to enhance our students’ opportunities to develop their creativity, collaboration, problem-solving, critical thinking and communication skills. Our program has been successful in equipping students with the skills they need to learn in a modern world that mixes both traditional and digital learning opportunities.

 2017 Transition

Moving all year levels to a parent-owned model will happen over a number of years. Ultimately it is expected that students will require a new computing device in Year 7, and again in Year 10, with our experiences showing that three years is the average time we can expect a device to work effectively given the intensity with which the devices are used and the pace of technological improvement.

Below is a table showing how we expect to begin the transition from school-owned to parent-owned in 2017.

Year Level in 2017 2017 Device
Year 7 Parent purchased. Standard device to provide consistency in the classroom
Year 8 School provided device

Parents may opt to buy in to the Parent-purchased program

Year 9 School provided device

Parents may opt to buy in to the Parent-purchased program

Year 10 Parent purchased from a limited choice of devices
Year 11 School provided device

Parents may opt to buy in to the Parent-purchased program

Year 12 School provided device

Parents may opt to buy in to the Parent-purchased program

The choice of device will be limited and will need to meet the following criteria:

  • Powerful enough to run all curriculum software across all subjects.
  • Large, robust hard drive for file storage.
  • Imaged with the same software to create a standardised software platform.
  • Touch screen and pen.
  • Mobile, robust and with long battery life.
  • Compact, light and ergonomic.
  • Compatible with peripheral devices such as screens, mobile storage, data probes, microphones and cameras.

Stuartholme School is continually investing in considerable upgrades of our ICT infrastructure and technology architecture. This will result in a more sophisticated and streamlined database, a more efficiently operating parent portal and a more responsive and flexible learning management system for the students.

This is a significant transition which has been seriously considered and researched. I truly believe this is the best and most sustainable path forward. We are encouraged with your support this week as we have responded to your enquiries. If you have any further questions, please email Further information will be provided as we progress in this implementation.

Kind regards and God bless,

Kristen Sharpe
